The aim of the English curriculum is to ensure that all students, regardless of their starting point, are able to access lessons that are inspiring, purposeful and appropriately challenging. We aim to do this by removing barriers to learning, supporting students in developing the skills, knowledge and confidence they need to succeed in all areas of English.
We do this by revisiting and consolidating prior learning before introducing new material, ensuring that students build on a secure foundation. This approach allows for continual reinforcement and interleaving, helping learners to retain and apply their knowledge over time.
Our curriculum is designed to be flexible so that teaching can be tailored to meet the needs of every learner. Where students require additional support, we focus on securing key skills and understanding; where students are ready for further challenge, we provide opportunities to extend their thinking, develop independence and deepen their analytical and creative responses.
Ultimately, our aim at St Cuthbert’s is that every child leaves with the skills and qualifications in English that enable them to communicate effectively, appreciate literature, and thrive in the next stage of their education and beyond.
Our English subject leader is Mrs C Garman.
